The Consul General of France M. Vincent Sciama presented the Order of the Palmes Académique to the renowned Musician Zachary Richard on 9th September during a moving ceremony held at the Myrtle Place Elementary School of Lafayette.
M. Sciama declared:
“This prestigious French award recognizes Zachary Richard’s unwavering commitment to French immersion schools and his leading role in promoting the French and Creole language in Louisiana. By focusing on the future, thanks particularly to his music and his work with groups like the French-language children’s choir les Etoiles de l’Immersion, Zachary Richard is showing us the way to an ambitious French-speaking community, focused on young people. We are very grateful to him for that.”
Zachary Richard has always been a strong advocate of French in Louisiana. In 2014, he associates the younger generations to his work by creating, with music teacher Jimmy Louis-Marie, Les Étoiles de l’Immersion, French-language children’s choir composed of students from Myrtle Place Elementary School, who were present at the ceremony, but also students from Martinique, the parish of New Iberia, Calcasieu and New Orleans.
Today, he confirms this commitment by organizing the first round of fundraising for the purchase of books for immersion programs, to support the Action Cadienne foundation and develop resources for students in these classes.
