The Hermione May Visit New Orleans in 2018-2019
According to a recent article by the online news source French Morning, the Hermione, a replica of the French warship commandeered by the Marquis de Lafayette from 1779 to 1793, is planning a return to the United States in 2018-2019. This time, the frigate will travel to the South, with a stop in New Orleans.
The arrival of the Hermione in Louisiana would have a special significance to the Crescent City, which will celebrate its Tricentennial in 2018.
“While the Hermione continues to make its way to Canada, its organizers foresee a return to the United States. And this time...to the South, notably to Florida.
‘I received confirmation that she will come to Florida’, Brigitte van den Hove-Smith, Head of the Florida Committee of the Association of Friends of the Hermione-Lafayette in America, confirmed to French Morning, Wednesday, during the reception celebrating the arrival of the Hermione in New York.
The stops for this future voyage? ‘Yorktown, North Carolina, South Carolina, Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Miami, Key West, Tampa, Pensacola, Mobile in Alabama, New Orleans and finally Lafayette in Louisiana’, she enumerated. She assures that the project received the agreement of the Florida’s Secretary of State but that the dates are still to be determined. The approval also still needs to be granted by the Hermione/La Fayette Association in France.
Multiple fundraising galas in Florida have secured 200,000 dollars to finance the ship’s return even before a stop-over had been predicted in the Sunshine State.”
