“We love librarians” declares the FCA, recognizing how libraries and librarians have been instrumental to the continued growth of graphic novel readership. As Alameda librarian Eva Volin reports in Publishers Weekly, “I don’t believe graphic novels are a trend; I believe this is how the industry will be going forward.”

Meet the authors at the American Library Association annual conference (#ALAAC18), along with their French and North American publishers.

Ten panel discussions, will feature Francophone graphic novelists and French publishing staff, in conversation with critically acclaimed cartoonists, such as Thi Bui, Mariko Tamaki, Ellen Forney, Jason Latour, Tee Franklin, Peter Tomasi, MK Czerwiec, Thomas Campi, and Vera Brosgol, and industry experts including librarians Betsy Bird, Candice Mack, Andrew Woodrow-Butcher, and Matthew Noe, and comics publishing specialists from France and American, such as Pauline Mermet, Charlotte Moundlic, Olivier Jalabert, Mark Siegel, Meg Lemke, and Julia Pohl-Miranda.

Plus: ALA’s “Now Showing” Screening stage to feature animated films and shorts based on French comics, including The Big Bad Fox, Tib & TumTum, and The Fox Badger Family.

“International comics are becoming trendy in American libraries...The varied genres that international comics—more specifically European graphic novels—bring to this market resonate with the multicultural collections of American libraries, as well as the diversity of American literature and pop culture,” says FCA President, Jean Paciulli.

“Half of the population of France reads at least one bande dessinée per year,” shares Flore Piacentino of the French Publishers Association. “Each year, translation rights for more than two hundred (200) French Comics are sold to American publishers."

The FCA is also an official 2018 sponsor of the ALA Eisner Reception (June 23). “The American Library Association’s Will Eisner Graphic Novel Grants recognize the important role that Graphic Novel Librarians have played in the growth of the graphic novel in libraries.

The reception celebrates the vision of Will Eisner, who championed the graphic novel and pioneered the graphic novel movement,” states organizer John Shableski.

The audience for comics is growing not just in numbers but in diversity, which the FCA will applaud as they host this year’s ALA meet-up of the “Valkeryies’ Valhalla”—a private group of women librarians who love comics! (Eligible librarians are encouraged to join and find event details at the Valkeryies’ Facebook page).

What about NOLA comics fans who aren’t attending ALA? The FCA is delighted to bring the artists into the city for FREE public events in New Orleans. See full schedule below.

To mark the opening of the convention (June 21), a private party will be held, co-hosted by the French Embassy in New Orleans, bringing together artists and other special guests. Press are encouraged to attend, please contact Meg.Lemke@gmail.com for an invitation / press credentials.
