"Les Cenelles": Poetic French Reading [fr]

Saturday, October 29, 2016, author, musician and Francophone militant Zachary Richard organized an excellent afternoon of poetry at the Louisiana Book Festival in Baton Rouge.

Students from schools in New Iberia (North Lewis Elementary), Lafayette (Prairie Elementary) and New Orleans (Audubon Charter School and De La Salle High School) gathered to read poems in French, extracts of the first published work in the United States (in 1845) by "free people of color", in order to take back the terminology of the era: Les Cenelles (Editions Tintamarre).

The Consul General opened the event, before ceding the floor to students and some of the great Francophone poets of Louisiana: Zachary Richard, Jean Arceneaux, Kirby Jambon et Brenda Mounier.

Emotions ran high to hear the recitations of these magnificent créole poems in French at the Louisiana Book Festival.
